Almeda Sheltered Housing, housing for independent people over 60 who are socioeconomically vulnerable
The Ramon Molinas Foundation is collaborating with Cáritas Diocesana de Barcelona to support Almeda Sheltered Housing, a residential service which aims to provide a dignified home to people over 60 years old who are independent but socioeconomically vulnerable.
Almeda Sheltered Housing provides comprehensive care, guaranteeing to cover the residents’ basic needs. At the same time however, sheltered housing allows older people to hold on to their independence, helping to maintain their decision-making abilities, personal and collective responsibilities, and strong links to their community. Residents can live autonomously, but are supported by care services and home-based teleassistant healthcare.
Located in Cornellà de Llobregat, the service provides accommodation for 24 residents. The Almeda Sheltered Housing residence is made up of 19 apartments, five of which are for a couple, and include a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. In addition, residents have access to a living room and laundry room which they share with the other tenants.
The only service which provides sheltered housing in Cornellà de Llobregat
Almeda Sheltered Housing is the only service of its kind offered in Cornellà de Llobregat, an area with 83,376 registered inhabitants. The residents of Almeda Sheltered Housing are people over 60 years old and are vulnerable to social and residential exclusion. They are people who have lost their home, live in poor-quality housing and receive social assistance or state pensions. They have often suffered from loneliness or social isolation and don’t have the support of family networks, although they are independent in their daily activities and have good cognitive skills.
Cáritas Diocesana de Barcelona decides on who to accept as residents using a number of indicators, and with the collaboration of other organisations. A professional team made up of a social worker and two family workers then decides on the right programme for each resident according to their personal profile. This team is also responsible for the monitoring of each individual to evaluate their progress. The Almeda Sheltered Housing residents pay a nominal monthly according to what they can afford.
Cáritas Diocesana de Barcelona, an organisation with a long humanitarian trajectory
Cáritas is a humanitarian organisation with global reach of the Catholic Church. The delegation of the diocese of Barcelona, which belongs to the framework which makes up this organisation, was created in 1944. From the very beginning, it has worked to take in and work with people in situations of poverty and vulnerability.
The organisation’s schemes are based around social action, raising awareness and denouncing injustice. Moreover, the organisation fights against poverty, social exclusion, intolerance, discrimination and against any action which violates human rights.
