La Gavina, a center that promotes the social and labor integration of people with intellectual disabilities
Ramon Molinas Foundation collaborated with Fundació Esmen in order to expand the Occupational Center that the entity has in Barcelona. The Occupational Center La Gavina is a day care service that promotes the social and labor integration of those people with an intellectual disability –equal or above 65%- who because of their conditions have difficulties to enter the world of work.
The Occupational Center La Gavina consists of a multi-disciplinary team. A team of direct care, composed by occupational monitors, as well as a technical team, formed by a technical director, a psychologist and a social worker, that ensures the integral attention of the users. Apart from being an occupational insertion service, La Gavina offers therapeutic services, a dining room, counselling and attention to the users and their families, as well as individualized psychological and social attention.
To ensure a decent standard of living for their users, the aim of the Center
The main aim of the Occupational Center La Gavina is to ensure a decent standard of living for all their users through the encouragement of their autonomy. To achieve this, the professionals that form part of the center work through an annual program of activities where the personal and social adjustment of the users and the performance of therapeutic occupation and pre-employment activities are the main pillars.
The activities of personal adjustment enable the beneficiaries of the service to acquire habits of personal and social autonomy, promote personal relationships among them and it offers them guidelines to behave correctly, as well as making them participate in activities within normal environments in order to stimulate the integration in the community. This segment of activities includes the settlement of a participatory assembly, tasks related to kitchen and dining room habits, leisure activities such as a swimming pool and a play room, and activities for knowing the environment. On the other hand, the pre-employment activities are intended so that the beneficiaries of the service acquire the adequate working habits in order to achieve a full integration.
