The service, propelled by Cáritas, provides dignified homes to people older than 60 who are socioeconomically vulnerable.
The Ramon Molinas Foundation is collaborating with Cáritas Diocesana de Barcelona to support Almeda Sheltered Housing, a residential service in Cornellà de Llobregat which aims to provide a dignified home to people over 60 years old who are independent but socioeconomically vulnerable.
Almeda Sheltered Housing is the only service of its kind offered in Cornellà de Llobregat, an area with 83,376 registered inhabitants. The residents of Almeda Sheltered Housing are people over 60 years old and are vulnerable to social and residential exclusion. The centre’s professional team provides comprehensive care which guarantees to cover the basic needs of the 24 residents. At the same time, however, sheltered housing allows older people to hold on to their independence, helping to maintain their decision-making abilities, personal and collective responsibilities, and strong links to their community.
Residents can live independently, but are supported by care services and home-based teleassistant healthcare. They are people who have lost their home, live in poor-quality housing and receive social assistance or state pensions. They have often suffered from loneliness or social isolation and don’t have the support of family networks, although they are independent in their daily activities and have good cognitive skills.
Cáritas Diocesana de Barcelona decides on who to accept as residents using a number of indicators, and with the collaboration of other organisations. A professional team made up of a social worker and two family workers then decides on the right programme for each resident according to their personal profile. The team is also responsible for the monitoring of each individual to evaluate their progress.
