32 residents of the home residence Albatros will participate in the initiative, which will conclude with a play performed in front of family and friends.
The Ramon Molinas Foundation, together with the Esmen Foundation and uTOpia Barcelona, is launching a theatre workshop to encourage the social integration of people with intellectual disabilities. The scheme will provide a voice to 32 residents of the Albatros home residence who, thanks to performing arts, will be able to experience new ways of sharing, communicating and generating ideas to help them with decision making and personal autonomy.
The workshop is part of a theatre movement called Theatre of the Oppressed. Created by Augusto Boal in the 1960s, the movement analyses the oppression suffered by people with intellectual disabilities, utilising education as a means of liberation and as a tool for social translation. The participants, split into two groups according to their level of personal autonomy, will be able to reflect on and analyse the oppression which they are subjected to, in order to combat it and become the protagonists in their own lives.
The scheme, which will last over eight months, will finish next June with a theatrical performance in which the workshop’s participants will be able to showcase all their hard work in front of family and friends.
