40 members of the home residence Albatros will participate in the initiative which will culminate with a theatrical performance in front of 300 family members and friends.
The Ramon Molinas Foundation, together with the Esmen Foundation and uTOpia Barcelona, is for the second year running launching a theatre workshop to encourage the social integration of people with intellectual disabilities. The scheme will provide a voice to 32 residents of the Albatros home residence who, using performing arts, will be able to experience new ways of sharing, communicating and generating ideas to help them with decision making and personal autonomy.
The workshop is part of a theatre movement called Theatre of the Oppressed. Created by Augusto Boal in the 1960s, the movement analyses the oppression suffered by people with intellectual disabilities, utilising education as a means of liberation and as a tool for social translation. The participants, split into two groups according to their level of personal autonomy, will be able to reflect on and analyse the oppression which they are subjected to, in order to combat it and become the protagonists in their own lives. Photography, music, rhythm and visual arts are essential parts of the process of theatrical creativity.
The scheme, which will last eight months, will finish next June with a theatrical performance, when the workshop’s participants will be able to showcase all their hard work in front of family and friends.
